Service Description
Offers a number of youth outreach programs that help youth and their family connect with their school and their community.
Settlement Workers in Schools
A school-based outreach program that connects newcomer families to services and resources in schools and the community.
- Provides orientation workshops to newcomers (OWN)
- Ensures timely referral to appropriate community services
- Provides information to clients about school and community transportation services
- Arranges meetings with family and with schools, and conducts follow-ups
- Promotes family involvement in the student’s school life
- Connects with students on an on-going basis and more.
Language Explorer’s Club
A weekly program for school-aged newcomers who would like an additional chance to practice and strengthen their English skills.
- Includes classroom time with various themes, games, activities, excursions, and outdoor activities.
- Helps newcomer students feel at home in their new city, feel confident with their emerging English skills, and meet others from around the world.
Recreational and Cultural Programs
Offers a number of recreational and cultural programs throughout the year.
- During the summer, offers programs that include day camps, mini vegetable gardens, wellness programs, art and culture, and educational field trips.
Eligibility
Newcomer students in prekindergarten to grade 12 and their families.
Application Process
Referral from schools and the Gateway. Walk-ins at the Welcome Centre.
