Court of Appeal

Provided by: Courts of Saskatchewan

View information about this organization

Service Description

The Court hears appeals in both civil and criminal matters.

  • Criminal appeals include sentence appeals, conviction appeals and youth matters.
  • Civil appeals include Charter issues, as well as commercial, administrative and family law matters.

The Court does not conduct trials or re-hearings. It reviews trials conducted in King’s Bench, Provincial Court and certain quasi-judicial commissions to determine if the judge or adjudicator made any errors of law.

In the majority of cases, the Court of Appeal is an individual’s last opportunity to appeal. Further appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada is sometimes an option for litigants (however, on average, fewer than five Saskatchewan cases per year are granted leave to appeal to the Supreme Court).
