Philosophy
- A non-profit, co-operative childcare and early learning facility – is licensed by the Early Learning and Care division of the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education.
- Operates a developmentally appropriate practice program in which the needs of the children are given the highest priority – each child’s unique personality, individual needs, and level of development are considered in the provision of services in the most appropriate environment for each child.
- Recognizes family as primary caregivers, teachers, and key decision makers for their children – racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversities of families are honored and the Early Childhood Educators create a nurturing atmosphere where acceptance and understanding are promoted.
- Honors community and strives to incorporate aspects of community spirit wherever possible.
- Recognizes the value of training and education for staff of the centre to ensure the promotion and provision of quality childcare/education – the centre’s Early Childhood Educators require on-going support, in-service, training, and resources to implement the curriculum and to grow professionally.
- Early Childhood Educators aim to join together with families and supporting professionals to ensure that a safe, caring, stimulating, and appropriate learning environment is available to all children in the program.
- Centre recognizes that children:
- Possess ways of learning unique to their stage of development.
- Learn through active exploration of their environment, direct interaction with people, making choices and constructing knowledge for themselves – program is flexible and child initiated rather than teacher directed.
- Learn by sensing, manipulating, and experimenting with materials.
- Learn about concrete, tangible, real objects and events that are relevant to their lives.
- Promotes “accessible, affordable, comprehensive, quality child care” for all children in the centre, the community, and as public policy.
Programs and Activities
- Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, individual/group activities – activities are developmentally appropriate and inclusive.
- Program is flexible to allow for a child’s individual needs in areas of physical growth, intellectual growth, language development, social/emotional development, and creative development.
- Believe that children learn best through play and centre encourages play and exploration – see the role of Early Childhood Educators as facilitating this play-based type of learning, using the Essential Learning Experiences guide, by creating an environment that promotes a sense of ‘wonder’.
- Aim to support child development by building partnerships with outside agencies and educational institutions within the community whenever possible.
- Community involvement is an important component to the program – off the premises excursions, such as neighborhood walks are posted in the parent information area – notices are sent home regarding any field trips requiring alternate modes of transportation.
Nutrition
- Provides a morning snack and afternoon snack, each with two food groups as well as lunch including all four food groups.
- Menu is monitored by the Department of Early Learning and Childcare and meals are prepared by a staff member or volunteer who has successfully completed a Food Safe course.
- Menu is posted in the parent information area.
- Parents are asked to discuss a child’s special diet with the Director – if you wish to bring food for your child, please ensure that it is nutritious and does not interfere with any other child’s allergies.
- Centre is a nut-free facility.
