Service Description

A human rights principle largely defined by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) to make sure that First Nations children do not face gaps or delays in accessing government services and are not denied government services because of their identity as First Nations children

Funding is provided for a variety of health, social and educational needs and can include:

  • addiction services
  • assessments and screenings
  • educational needs such as tutoring services, teaching assistants, specialized school transportation, psycho-educational assessments, assistive technologies and electronics
  • long-term care for children with specialized needs
  • medical supplies and equipment
  • mental health services
  • mobility aids
  • services from Elders
  • specialized hearing aids
  • therapeutic services for individuals or groups (speech therapy, physiotherapy or occupational therapy)
  • traditional healing services
  • transportation to appointments

The following services are also provided:

  • engagement and education to community members on Jordan’s Principle
  • support for community resource teams
  • assistance to identify children in the community with unmet needs and to identify service gaps

Named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, who was a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba

Eligibility

Any child under the age of majority in their province/territory of residence who permanently resides in Canada on or off reserve and meets one of the following criteria:

  • is registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • has one parent or guardian who is registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • is recognized by their Nation and meets an identified health, education or social need for the purposes of Jordan's Principle
  • is ordinarily resident on reserve

    Contact a local service coordinator or National Contact Centre for assistance and information

    If request is denied, an appeal may be sent in as a written request within one year of the date of denial

    Documents Required

    The following information is required to access supports:

  • application form confirming consent from the parent or guardian
  • a letter of support that shows how the requested product, service or support links directly to the child's unmet health, social or educational needs -- letters of support must be provided by a health professional, educational professional or Elder or Knowledge Keeper, depending on their expertise as it relates to their ability to determine the unmet needs of the child, and the supports required
  • additional documentation may be required to show how the requested product, service or support meets the child's identified health, social or educational need
