Philosophy

  • Children are capable and competent learners.
  • Children require loving and consistent educators.
  • All children are individual and educators need to meet children at their level.
  • Educators need to establish a warm and inviting environment for children.
  • It is important for children to learn self regulation, social skills, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution.
  • Work with parents to resolve behavioural concerns.
  • Have access to speech pathologists and behavioural consultants if needed for children with higher than average needs.

Programs and Activities

  • Follow the Early Learning Program Guide set out by the Ministry of Education. (Play-based program)
  • Children have free choice on activities that they do through the day – play invitations and teacher led activities are planned – children are welcome to join in if they are interested.
  • Follow a play and exploration philosophy which means that educators observe children to determine interests and build activities based on those interests.
  • Activities are planned to target all developmental areas – social/emotional, physical, intellectual, and cognitive.
  • Opening of day is free play followed by snack and then teacher directed activities and/or outside play. After lunch is nap time for those who nap and quiet activity time for our non-nappers. Afternoon snack follows nap time and then more outside play and/or teacher directed activities. (Children are welcome to take part in teacher directed activities but this is not forced)
  • Annual festival that all parents and children are invited to attend.
  • Periodic pancake breakfasts and potluck suppers.
  • Invitations to classroom events – special party days or concerts.
  • Use of Lillio app to share the days events and communicate with parents.

Nutrition

  • Children require a variety of foods to grow strong and healthy – introduction to a variety of different foods helps expand children’s food preferences – introduction to foods from different cultures is also important.
  • Morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack are provided – classrooms keep fruit and crackers in the room for children who get hungry in between scheduled meal times.
  • Work with parents for children with allergies or specific nutritional requirements.
  • Nutrition specialists work with parents to determine the best options for each individual child. Substitutions are made where possible and parents are asked to bring alternates when substitutions are not possible.
