Service Description

Help newcomers develop practical skills and knowledge that support their settlement in Canada. Through hands-on learning and community-based activities, participants build confidence and independence. Programs include:

  • Citizenship Test Preparation: helps participants prepare for the Canadian citizenship exam through weekly assignments, group activities, videos, and handouts based on the Discover Canada guide.
  • Cooking Healthy, Economical Food (CHEF): helps participants learn to cook complete, balanced meals by engaging in all aspects of food preparation, including planning, shopping, and cooking. Participants become familiar with local supermarkets and practice safe food handling in the kitchen.
  • Computer Classes: helps students develop essential computer literacy skills, including basic keyboarding, internet navigation, and using Microsoft Office applications. Encourages confidence and supports the use of technology in everyday life and the workplace.
  • Driving Theory: provides a 10-hour monthly course delivered by a registered driving instructor. Helps participants learn traffic signs, road rules, and driving regulations needed to obtain a Class 7 learner’s license.
  • Enhanced Lifeskills: supports refugees in adjusting to life in Canada by building confidence and teaching essential life skills. Covers areas such as using public transit, preparing and storing food safely, using household appliances, budgeting, doing laundry, maintaining a clean home, and accessing community services.
  • Global Gathering Place New Community Legacy Scholarship: awards a total of $5,000 in scholarships to help refugees and immigrants access post-secondary education, training courses, and certificate programs.
  • Information Sessions: offers bi-weekly drop-in sessions that provide information on key settlement and integration topics, including parenting, employment, Canadian culture, banking, healthcare, education, driving, winter preparation, and volunteering.

Eligibility

- Most programs are open to Permanent Residents, as well as individuals with work or study permits.

- Enhanced Lifeskills - open to Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs).

Application Process

For most programs, clients can register in person at one of the Global Gathering Place offices.

- Enhanced Lifeskills - referral from the Saskatoon Open Door Society.
- Global Gathering Place New Community Legacy Scholarship - apply on the website.

Documents Required

New clients need to show one item from each of the following categories:

1. Government Identification:
- Passport
- Identification card
- Driver’s license

2. Immigration Documents:
- Permanent Resident Card
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR)
- Study Permit
- Work Permit
- Visitor Record
- Proof of Citizenship
