Service Description

Provides Mobility Service dogs to individuals with physical disabilities, enhancing their quality of life and promoting greater independence. Mobility Service dogs can assist by:

  • helping to retrieve objects
  • opening and closing doors
  • seeking out help
  • supporting clients in moving from one point to another (example: wheelchair to bed, etc.)

Due to high demand, it could take two or three years before the DWW have a trained dog for you.

Eligibility

■ Individuals with a physical disability and use a manual/power wheelchair for mobility.
■ 15+ years old at time of application and 16+ years old at placement.
■ Demonstrate an active enough lifestyle to qualify for a Service Dog (e.g., working, attending school, participating in activities outside of the home, etc.).
■ Mental awareness to be the sole handler of a Service Dog and be responsible for the dog in public places.
■ Preferable, Service Dogs will be placed in home environments in which this dog is the only canine living in the home. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
■ Applicants must be able to meet the emotional, physical, and financial needs of the Service Dog and offer a stable home environment.

Application Process

1) Fill out a letter of intent
2) The Client Services team invites eligible applicants to submit a full application
3) If application is successful, applicant is placed on the waiting list.

Documents Required

Eligible applicants are contacted by the DWW team, who provide the list of required documents.

Fees

◾ The main handler of the dog is required to attend a two-week training session at the DWW main office and/or home's applicant.
◾ DWW works directly with a local hotel that provides discounted accommodation for the duration of Team Training, along with a comfortable training room for use during the day.
◾ Applicants are responsible for paying for their own food and accommodation during Team Training, as well as a $300 Team Training kit fee (payment plans available) that covers the cost of the Service Dog’s equipment and other items.
