Philosophy

  • Centre follows the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, which is based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment.
  • Programs are based on the interests of the children through self-guided curriculums that operate according to the following principles:
    • Children must have some control over the direction of their learning.
    • Children must be able to learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing and hearing.
    • Children have a relationship with other children and with material items in the world that they must be allowed to explore.
    • Children must have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves.

Programs and Activities

  • Centre has a play-based program where the children have guidance but ultimately decide what activity they want to partake in.
  • Centre follows a basic schedule with flexibility for different age groups which includes the following activities:
    • Quiet play time.
    • Breakfast
    • Centre play
    • Morning snack
    • Group activities (calendar, weather, attendance, stories, songs).
    • Active play (outdoors if possible)
    • Lunch
    • Afternoon snack

Nutrition

  • Believe proper nutrition is essential for a child’s physical and social development.
  • Centre offers breakfast, lunch and two snacks each day.
  • Each meal is prepared by staff with safe food handling certification and planned in accordance with nutrition guidelines from the Ministry of Education.
  • Each breakfast will contain servings from at least three food groups.
  • Each lunch will contain servings from all four food groups.
  • Each snack will contain one serving of fruit or vegetables plus one serving from another food group.
  • Milk will be served at breakfast and lunch.
  • Water will be served with snacks and will be available throughout the day.
  • 100% unsweetened fruit and/or vegetable juice will be offered no more than three times per week.
  • Other sweetened beverages, fried foods, pastries, candies and foods high in fat, salt or calories will be limited and will appear on the menu no more than three times per week, and will be served in addition to healthy options.
  • For children with food intolerances (e.g. lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, etc.) or other dietary restrictions, parents are asked to supply alternate products (e.g. soy milk, soy cheese, rice crackers, rice bread, etc.) – these products will be labelled with your child’s name, stored in the kitchen and served when appropriate.
