Service Description
Canada Learning Bond (CLB) – is money that the Government of Canada will add to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). This money helps to pay the costs of a child’s full- or part-time studies after high school. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $2,000 for an eligible child and no personal contributions to an RESP are required to receive the CLB. Visit the website to learn more about the CLB.
Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) – is money that the Government of Canada will add to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). This money helps to pay the costs of a child’s full- or part-time studies after high school. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $7,200 for an eligible child, however, a parent or guardian must contribute to an RESP in order to receive the funds. Eligibility
To be eligible for the CLB, a child must:
- Be from a low-income family
- Be born on or after January 1, 2004
- Be a resident of Canada
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be named in an RESP
To be eligible for the CESG, a child must:
- Be a resident of Canada
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be named as a beneficiary in a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP)
The CESG is available until the end of the calendar year that a child turns 17. However, there are eligibility restrictions for children who are 16 or 17 years old. A contribution must be made to the RESP for a child to get the CESG.
Application Process
To apply for the Canadian Education Savings Grant (CESG):
1. Gather personal information
2. Open and contribute to an RESP
3. Complete application form with RESP promoter
4. Check to see that the grant has been deposited
